山菜採り/ Mountain vegetable picking

【活動について】
日本人学生と留学生を合わせて、総勢２１人で大学近くの川辺にて山菜を採り、調理をして食べました。当初の予定ではゼンマイやコゴミなどの収穫を予定していましたが、ちょうど時期がすぎてしまったため、代わりによもぎ、秋田蕗、そしてタンポポを収穫し、天ぷらにして稲庭うどんと一緒に食べました。思っていたよりも近くに食べれる植物があり、またそれらが美味しいことに日本人学生、留学生共々驚きを隠せない様子でした。特にタンポポに関しては収穫の時点で食べれるかどうか自体、全員が疑心暗鬼でしたが、食べた後には１番美味しいと、絶賛の嵐でした。身近にある植物でも食物として食べることができるということがわかり、”自然の恵み”という言葉をひしひしと感じられました。

”The most memorable activity was seeing the Japanese Serow! I know it doesn't have to do with the activity but that was awesome to see wildlife like that in Japan. I feel like when I saw the vegetables and how many there would that that was really amazing to me on how many there were growing naturally. Seeing the scenery was absolutely great! Seeing the forest really made me want to go explore much more! And the experience of cooking and eating the vegetables was amazing! I would have never been able to imagine the flavor of the vegetables and they were all great!”

”I thought the coolest part of the activity was getting to explore and experience some of the surrounding areas around Akita International University. With the campus being so isolated it's hard sometimes, unless you're very adventurous, to go out and see more of what makes Akita beautiful so going as a group and seeing the beautiful landscape was really great. I also loved talking to the おばあちゃん (grandmas) in the neighborhood because they were so friendly and warm and I think a good indication of the nature of people in Akita.”
