【About activity】

For our Sansai picking event, 21 international students and Japanese students gathered together and went to a riverbed near the AIU campus to pick and then cook wild mountain vegetables. In the original plan, we planned to pick Kogomi and Zenmai, but because we missed the season, we harvested Fuki, Yomogi, and Dandelions instead. After picking, we walked back to campus and made the vegetables into tempura and ate them with udon. We found the vegetables closer to campus than we expected and the Japanese students and International students alike were very surprised at how delicious these vegetables turned out. Especially the dandelions were surprising for students as they were suspicious about this plant being edible, but when they tried them they were delicious! I knew that the nearby plants would be edible and so I felt that “nature is a blessing” very deeply.

”今まではただの雑草としての認識だったタンポポが食物になり、1番美味しかったこと!!”

”The most memorable activity was seeing the Japanese Serow! I know it doesn't have to do with the activity but that was awesome to see wildlife like that in Japan. I feel like when I saw the vegetables and how many there would that that was really amazing to me on how many there were growing naturally. Seeing the scenery was absolutely great! Seeing the forest really made me want to go explore much more! And the experience of cooking and eating the vegetables was amazing! I would have never been able to imagine the flavor of the vegetables and they were all great!”

”I thought the coolest part of the activity was getting to explore and experience some of the surrounding areas around Akita International University. With the campus being so isolated it's hard sometimes, unless you're very adventurous, to go out and see more of what makes Akita beautiful so going as a group and seeing the beautiful landscape was really great. I also loved talking to the おばあちゃん (grandmas) in the neighborhood because they were so friendly and warm and I think a good indication of the nature of people in Akita.”

”おばあちゃんに会えたのと、カモシカに会えたのがとても良かったです。また、あの時間にあの場所をお散歩すること自体、大学からも近くてとても気持ち良かったです。うどんと山菜も美味しかったです!”

”When we(I) met a deer looks like uncommon, meet grandmas, saw farmlands, saw the sight, watched the members were walking, and especially ate the noodles.(memorable moments)"
