【About activity】

For this activity, 29 Japanese and International students went together to climb Mt. Taihei Maedake. Mt. Taihei consists of three main peaks which are called Maedake (774 m), Nakadake (952 m), and Okudake (1171 m). As you can see, the tallest peak is only about 1000 meters high, but since it juts out from the flat surrounding land, it looks quite beautiful. Because of this beauty, and because of the rich history of pilgrimages to this mountain I felt the faith that is tied to this mountain. Relics of these ancient pilgrimages, monuments to the ascetics that climbed in the past remain on the slope of the mountain. An interesting fact about the mountain is that women were forbidden to climb the mountain past Maedake until around 1840. Possibly a remnant of this era, we found a small temple for women along the trail. The climb was enriched by the background knowledge and history we learned and because of this we enjoyed the climb very much.

”Standing on top of the mountain with all the members. And also seeing the ocean from the top of the mountain”

"At the beginning of the hike was more like rock climbing rather than "hiking". But the weather was fine and the environment was very clean and beautiful, so i really enjoyed the trip."

"Being on top of the mountain and seeing the view but also being able to talk and connect with so many interesting people. It was fun to hear everyone's stories."

”The best part of the day was hiking the mountain and being surrounded by amazing scenery including snow clad mountains, gorgeous forest and waterfalls. Similar to all climbs, the moment when you reach the top is definitely a highlight!”

”I thought there were many memorable moments, but one that stands out for me was reaching the top (or at least the highest point we managed to reach). As I had never experienced walking through snow, it was very new to me and so the last few steps to reach the top after that long climb were precious. Then of course was the view from the top - I don't think I've seen such a spectacular view before, except maybe seeing the peak of Mt Fuji through the clouds on the plane. I can only imagine what it would be like at the very top of the mountain. I'd definitely like to try climbing Mt Taihei again!”
